Using balance of seasonal herbage supply and demand to inform sustainable grassland management on the Qinghai–Tibetan Plateau

Xinquan ZHAO, Liang ZHAO, Qi LI, Huai CHEN, Huakun ZHOU, Shixiao XU, Quanmin DONG, Gaolin WU, Yixin HE

Frontiers of Agricultural Science and Engineering 2018, Volume 5, Issue 1,   Pages 1-8 doi: 10.15302/J-FASE-2018203

Abstract: Pastoral livestock production on the QTP is characterized by imbalance in both quality and quantity betweenlivestock seasonal nutrient requirements and herbage production, which forces pastoralists to keep largernumbers of livestock for longer periods, leading to overgrazing. To solve these problems, an integrated crop-livestock system is promoted to improve the efficiency oflivestock production and conserve natural grassland as well for a sustainable system for the QTP.

Frontiers of Agricultural Science and Engineering 2021, Volume 8, Issue 1,   Pages 81-96 doi: 10.15302/J-FASE-2020365

Abstract: Livestock production in the United States (US) and Canada is diverse, but shows a common trend in mostlivestock sectors toward fewer farms producing the majority of animal products despite a large numberWith concentration of livestock operations comes the challenge of managing manures. When sufficient land is available and nutrients are needed, livestock manure is an excellent nutrientHowever, when livestock production is constrained in a geographical area and animal densities are high

POLICIES AND REGULATIONS FOR PROMOTING MANURE MANAGEMENT FOR SUSTAINABLE LIVESTOCK PRODUCTION IN CHINA

Frontiers of Agricultural Science and Engineering 2021, Volume 8, Issue 1,   Pages 45-57 doi: 10.15302/J-FASE-2020369

Abstract: Livestock numbers in China have more than tripled between 1980 and 2017.The increase in the number of intensive livestock production systems has created the challenges of decoupledcrop and livestock systems, low utilization of manures in croplands, and subsequent environmental pollutionMost recent survey data indicate that the utilization of livestock manures was 70% in 2017, includingthe use of third-party enterprises that facilitate manure exchange between farms and a more integrated

Frontiers of Agricultural Science and Engineering 2021, Volume 8, Issue 1,   Pages 97-110 doi: 10.15302/J-FASE-2020380

Abstract: Highly specialized agriculture has decoupled crop and livestock production but has succeeded in intensifyingthe lack of diversity in regions with highly specialized agriculture, promoting renewed interest in integratedcrop-livestock systems (ICLS), not only because ICLS are more diverse than specialized systems, but

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT OF CROP-LIVESTOCK FARMS IN AFRICA

Frontiers of Agricultural Science and Engineering 2021, Volume 8, Issue 1,

Abstract:

Crop-livestock farms across Africa are highly variable due to in agroecological and socioeconomicfactors, the latter shaping the demand and supply of livestock products.Crop-livestock farms in Africa in the 20-first century are very different from most mixed farms elsewhereAfrican crop-livestock farms are smaller in size, have fewer livestock, lower productivity and less dependencyThis paper discusses the role African crop-livestock farms have in the broader socio-agricultural economy

EXPLORING THE RECYCLING OF MANURE FROM URBAN LIVESTOCK FARMS: A CASE STUDY IN ETHIOPIA

Frontiers of Agricultural Science and Engineering 2021, Volume 8, Issue 1,

Abstract:

Livestock manure was the main organic waste in urban and peri-urban areas.

• Only 13%–38% of excreted N by livestock will be recycled in croplands.

• Intensification of urban livestock production greatly increased N surpluses.

• Reducing population growth and increasing livestock productivity needed.UPA is providing nutritious food to residents but the manures produced by UPA livestock farms and other
